There is no AIVIS, there will be no AIVIS unless you can come up with a good argument why there should be, and I will not be starting back at landing for my history as we all know what happened. Also this means that the adventures of the people of the ninth pass are nil when it comes to AIVIS, though just for the sake of fun we will say that they did exist and did everything that was not connected with AIVIS. So yes Jaxom, Ruth, Lessa, F’lar and the others did live. This also means that all the intervals have only been 200 turns there were no 400 turn ones. The old timers were brought forward and then banished to southern meaning southern was created, but it died out after the failed attempted to acquire a new queen and has not been needed since then.
It was about 195 turns after the ninth pass and the adventures of the legendary Lessa and her gold Ramoth who traveled those 200 turns to retrieve the oldtimers, Jaxom and his white mate Ruth the dragon who was supposed to have died less then a turn after his hatching but lived to die after his rider who passed away in his sleep at 60 for reasons unknown, along with all those now only legends. Things have gone on and along with those things have been the diseases. Though like all things those diseases of the past do not always stay gone.
An unknown disease sprung up in Crom Hold touching most of the people of Pern as it spread. Nothing could halt it’s spread it seemed and before long the older people started to died from this unseen menace. Like most it struck the old and the young harder then it did those between though the older ones were the first to perish the very young soon began to join them.
The keening of dragons didn’t stop all over pern as one rider after another joined the dead some not even passing *between* so weakened were they. The sickness seemed to drain the very life from a person making the tired and weak withering them away in the faces of family and friends, most ended up dieing in their sleep or in an attempted flight *between* on their beloved lifemates.
It went on for quite some time probably at least a good half a turn before finally someone found the answer in an old hide. Even though such a great time had passed there were still many who did not show signs of the sickness, some who were showing a resistance to it and so were only affected slowly dieing a painful and slow death, then there were those that were so far gone it was a wonder they still had the will to breath. Though in Crome Hold, the place this had all started there were even a number who had recovered.
The numbers of those that had recovered and those that were still not affected was not as great as could be hoped, but it was enough to give some hope. Using the knowledge from the old hides a vaccine was made and given to those who had not gotten sick then they along with those who had gotten better assisted those who were still sick.
Over the next half a turn the disease was finally eradicated. Some of the recovered still showed signs of their brush with death: withered bodies that would not recover completely leaving them weaker then before; some showed blindness, practical blindness, or even colorblindness; and some had hearing loss. Not every one was left with these affects, but probably half of those who were sick and recovered probably do not even dragonriders were spared leavening some riders who are still alive blind, deaf, or in extreme cases unable to even get to the neck of their dragon due to their muscles not recovering.
By the time all was said and done and that horrible turn had passed most of those under the age of 5 or 6 turns and all but a handful over about 24 turns had perished due to their age and their increased susceptibility to the disease.
There are but two queens left on the whole of Pern and neither are of the age to rise yet one being about 15 months old and the other only being a turn of age. There are only enough dragonriders to have two Weyrs with one queen in each in hopes that they will have larger clutches. The weyrlings that survived have been transferred to the remaining Weyrs as have the clutches that are yet to hatch.
Rosuto Weyr, which is the renamed Igen Weyr, has about 50 of the flightless Junior Weyrlings, and 50 of the Senior Weyrlings called as such because their dragons can already fly. They have what is left of the two clutches that were closest together to hatch the one from Igen Weyr it’s self and the one from Ista Weyr.
Mikomi Weyr, which is the renamed High Reaches Weyr, has about 100 of the flightless Junior Weyrlings, and 150 of the Senior Weyrlings called as such because their dragons can already fly. They also have what is left of the three clutches that did not go to Rosuto. Mikomi has fewer dragonriders left which is why they were given the greater number of eggs and Weyrlings.
So both remade Weyrs now struggle under the leadership of Weyrwomen who were not fully trained, Weyrleaders who could very well know as little as their Weyrwoman, Candidate and Weyrling Masters who are not long out of training themselves most likely, and Dragonriders who are in their twenties at best. Not to mention that they have no clue how long before thread returns.
